Meet the Team

Stu

I found Functional Patterns at the end of my first year practising physiotherapy in 2015. At the time I was questioning whether it was the right career for me and wasn't really enjoying the job as a whole. I found clients were generally uninterested in long term answers to injuries and dysfunctions. I needed a better way to help my clients with chronic health conditions and those with ongoing niggles and pains that couldn't be explained by traditional tests. I was also looking at getting back into training myself , after injuring my back during a Crossfit workout four years earlier.

I started dabbling in all the YouTube tutorials from Functional Patterns and read "The Power of Posture" but hadn't fully committed. Fast forward to 2017 and I ruptured my ACL playing Oz-Tag, before moving to Canada. I decided to conservatively treat my knee and downloaded the FP 10 Week Online course.
I immediately had relief following the MFR protocols and found the corrective exercises began to correct my dysfunctions to a level where I could comfortably snowboard and surf within a few months. I then went on to do the Human Foundations Course in Vancouver and have since completed HBS1 and HBS2. I am constantly working on my biomechanics and know there's many things I need to work on and even more that I am yet to discover. However, I'm more confident than ever that I can go for a surf, run around the park with my kids or go and play a game of Oz-tag without being stiff and sore the next day.

I am passionate about giving clients the tools and framework to help themselves get out of pain, dysfunction, and be able to be a functional contributing member of society.

FP is by no means a miracle cure. It requires the hard and often uncomfortable work of change at a fundamental level. However, I can confidently say whether you're a SO-something mum that's trying to get back into exercise, or a professional athlete wanting to stay in the game longer and improve movement efficiently, and everything in between, Functional Patterns provides the most utility and is the best way forward.

Like many kids, I grew up constantly active—playing every sport I could, including AFL, boxing, athletics, and tennis. But with that came a long list of injuries: osteitis pubis in 2013, repeated shoulder dislocations and subluxations through 2014–2015, broken ankles in both 2008 and 2022, and multiple soft tissue injuries along the way. I was also small in stature compared to my peers and turned to traditional strength and conditioning methods in hopes of gaining size, speed, and durability. Instead, I found myself breaking down faster and getting further from my initial goal.

In 2017, I stumbled across Functional Patterns while searching YouTube for alternatives to traditional training. I was living in a remote town at the time, completely disconnected from anyone who knew of FP. But after watching CEO Naudi Aguilar speak on the platforms channel and trying some of the release work and corrective movements for myself, I felt an immediate shift. The methods spoke to my experiences so specifically, it felt like someone finally understood the underlying issues I’d been chasing solutions to for over a decade. FP’s focus on training in line with our evolutionary biology and the innate mechanics of human movement gave me a completely new direction.

After years of trial and error with physiotherapists, chiropractors, and other therapists, I decided to fully commit to FP. In early 2023, I earned my Human Foundations certification and made the move across the country to pursue a career in this field. In 2024, I travelled to Las Vegas to complete my Human Biomechanics Specialist Level 1 certification, deepening both my skillset and understanding of what it means to regenerate the human body at a foundational level.

Now working under Stu’s guidance at Functional Patterns Newcastle, I continue to refine my own biomechanics while helping clients take control of theirs. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, recurring injuries, or simply want to move and perform better, I’m passionate about helping you address the root causes—not just the symptoms—and build a body that holds up for the long run.
